DBA (Database Administrator) in Customs
DBA or database administrator has a very vital role in governmental organizations such as Customs because the information that the Customs Department works includes a huge amount of sensitive, confidential and financial data related to imports, exports, goods clearance, legal cases, etc.
Main Duties of a DBA in Customs:
1. Customs Database Management:
• Create, maintain, and optimize databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL that store import/export data, trader information, tariffs, and clearance records.
2. Data Security Monitoring:
• Controlling user access to data
• Encrypting and backing up sensitive data
• Identifying potential threats or cyber attacks
3. Backup and Recovery:
• Scheduling regular data backups
• Ensuring rapid data recovery in the event of a failure or attack
4. Database Performance Optimization (Tuning):
• Improving query execution speed
• Monitoring system resources and memory usage
5. Cooperation with the Customs Software Development Team:
• Cooperation with programmers to implement customs management systems (such as the Customs Unit Window, EPL System, Comprehensive Customs Affairs System)
6. Documentation and Reporting:
• Generating information reports for managers
• Recording changes, maintenance operations, and technical problems
Skills required for a DBA in Customs:
• Proficiency in SQL and database management systems such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL
• Familiarity with data security concepts
• Ability to perform Backup/Recovery
• Familiarity with customs or ERP systems
• Good understanding of import/export processes and customs laws (an advantage)
• Ability to work in a team and solve problems
Experience and Employment Requirements:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in:
• Software Engineering
• Information Technology
• Computer Engineering
• Computer Science
• Work experience as a DBA or database expert is usually required (at least 2 to 3 years)
• Employment exams are also held in government organizations such as customs
