A kindergarten teacher teaches the basic skills and knowledge needed for elementary school. Kindergarten is the first stage in a child's formal education and sometimes the child's first long-term separation from the family. Kindergarten teachers spend their classes teaching basic academic and social skills to prepare students for entering the new world.

Kindergarten Teacher Job Description

In general, a kindergarten teacher should perform the following job descriptions:

Teaching the basics of reading and writing and how to count, add, and subtract numbers

Helping children learn interpersonal skills and teaching them how to interact with other students

Assessing each student's progress in the classroom and determining the best way for them to reach their goals

Communicating with students' parents or guardians about their academic progress

Monitoring the classroom during recess and lunch to keep children safe

Reporting to school administrators about class progress

Spending time outside of class to prepare and develop lesson plans and activities and review student homework

Providing materials needed for classroom activities

Job Requirements

A bachelor's degree is required for a kindergarten teacher, and you should have a teaching certificate or diploma.

Education

Most kindergartens require individuals with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education or elementary education. If you have a degree in another field, follow the state teacher education program to earn a teaching certificate. You will need to take courses and pass exams.

Education

When you earn your degree or are in the process of earning it, you should become familiar with the classroom system by teaching in real classrooms. When you start your job, some daycare centers require you to take advanced continuing education courses to earn a valid teaching certificate.

Skills

Daycare teachers need to have a variety of skills to be able to perform their duties well and succeed in the classroom. The skills that most daycare teachers need are as follows:

Empathy: Be compassionate in teaching. Children in daycare learn a lot of things without having any prior knowledge. As a daycare teacher, you must help students learn concepts that they have never encountered before and that are challenging and difficult for them to understand.

Creativity: To engage students in class, you need to teach lessons creatively; and be flexible in adapting each lesson to the way students learn.

Patience: Coming from home to kindergarten is difficult for kindergarten students. These students need different levels of help adjusting to the classroom environment for the first time. So, as a kindergarten teacher, you need to be patient with your students as they adjust to kindergarten.

Planning and Organizing Skills: Before class begins, you need to create a lesson plan. This takes time; and it requires a lot of effort. Implementing this plan in kindergarten classrooms is challenging. Knowing how to adjust the natural pace of your class to the kindergarten schedule requires strong planning skills and flexibility.

Communication Skills: As a kindergarten teacher, you need to know how to communicate academic ideas to children in the easiest way possible. Doing this best requires not only strong communication skills but also an abstract understanding of how children think. You will also need to be able to communicate well with the students’ parents and the daycare administrators.

Management Skills: In a daycare classroom, you are the classroom manager. Advanced management skills will help you keep students on track throughout the day, keep them engaged, and make sound judgments about the needs of the class.

Work Environment

Most kindergarten teachers teach in public schools, but there are also non-profit kindergartens where teachers can teach just as well. These teachers spend time teaching in the classroom during school hours, but outside of this time they must correct homework and prepare lessons.

Kindergarten teachers usually do not work during the summer, but each kindergarten's work schedule is different. The teacher may need to plan for the current year. These teachers spend time before or after school to meet with parents or guardians of students. They talk about the students' class schedule or their needs in the classroom. They usually provide for their own classes. This allows for a lot of flexibility for a good classroom.
