The drilling skills test is a practical and technical test that is held in technical and vocational fields, vocational knowledge, or workshop courses.
The purpose of this test is to evaluate an individual's ability and skill in using a drill (electric or manual) to perform specific tasks such as drilling, assembly, measuring accuracy, and observing safety precautions.
The content of the drilling skills test
Usually includes the following:
1. Understanding tools and equipment
• Types of drills: electric, cordless, column, manual
• Types of drills: diamond, metal, wood, wall
• Working with clamps, screwdrivers and workbench
2. Observing safety principles
• Using safety equipment: glasses, gloves, apron
• Checking cables, on/off switch
• How to hold the tool correctly
3. Performing drilling operations
• Choosing the right type of drill based on the material of the part (wood, metal, plastic, concrete)
• Marking the hole location
• Accurate drilling with a specified depth and diameter
• Adhering to standard angles and horizontal/verticality
4. Quality control and measurement
• Using a caliper, ruler or goniometer to check the accuracy of the holes
• Checking the depth, centering, and uniformity of the holes
5. Troubleshooting and maintaining the tool
• Checking for dull or broken drills
• Lubricating and cleaning the tool
• Changing the drill
Assessment in the exam
• Accuracy in drilling (an error of less than 0.5 mm is considered a point)
• Speed and order in work
• Full compliance with safety precautions
• Familiarity with tools and answering oral questions
Suggested Reading Resources
• Technical and Vocational Organization handbooks (National Skill Standard Code: “General Driller”)
• Technical training videos on YouTube or apps like “My Technical”
• Art school workshop books
Earning international certifications in Screwdriving and Well Control can open up a wide range of career opportunities in the oil, gas, renewable energy, construction, and even research industries. Below, we review the most popular certifications, learning objectives, job opportunities, and related educational resources.
Internationally recognized certifications
1. IWCF (International Well Control Forum)
This certification is for people who work in drilling, well control and blowout prevention operations. The different levels of this certification are:
• Level 2 (Introductory): Suitable for people in the initial stages of work.
• Level 3 (Driller): Designed for drillers and driller assistants.
• Level 4 (Supervisor): Suitable for supervisors, drilling engineers and rig managers.
Training courses include topics such as well control equipment, blowout prevention methods, practical simulation and a written exam.
2. IADC Rig Pass
This certification is designed for drilling rig workers and focuses on safety, hazard awareness and working conditions on the rig. This certification is required in many oil and gas projects around the world.
3. IADC Well Sharp
These courses are designed for drillers and supervisors and focus on drilling operations, well control and crisis management. The courses include theoretical and practical training with advanced simulations.
Learning Objectives
• Familiarity with drilling equipment and techniques: Understanding the types of drills, drills, and drilling systems.
• Well control and blowout prevention: Learning methods for identifying and managing well blowouts.
• Workplace safety: Complying with safety standards and preventing accidents.
• Crisis management: Preparing to face emergencies and making sound decisions.
Career Opportunities
By obtaining international certificates, you can work in the following positions:
• Driller: Performs drilling operations on oil or gas rigs.
• Assistant Driller: Assists the driller in drilling operations.
• Drilling Supervisor: Manages drilling operations and supervises the team.
• Drilling Engineer: Designs and plans drilling operations.
• Rig Manager: Manages all drilling rig activities.
These positions are available in the oil and gas, renewable energy, construction, and research industries.
Educational resources and accredited courses
• Petroleum Training Services (PTS): Provider of IWCF and IADC courses worldwide.
• ASTS Global: Training courses in drilling technology with international standards.
• Training portal: IWCF courses in Norway with practical simulations.
Additional Notes
• Certification Validity: IWCF and IADC certifications are recognized worldwide in the oil and gas industry.
• Course Duration: Training courses typically last between 5 and 10 days.
